Our enjoyment of beekeeping was so great we have 80+ hives now. And we have helped many new hobbyist beekeepers get started and enjoy their new hobby.
Your First Step to Success
The RJ Honey Bee School 101 is the perfect venue to start exploring whether you can have the same joy as we have in keeping bees.
There is a lot to learn about beekeeping. In fact, the learning never ends. You’ll learn…
•Why are bees important?
•Who is the honey bee?
•What are the parts of the hive?
•What other equipment is needed?
•How do I care for the bees?
•What are the costs?
This two hour class will give you enough information for you to give a thumbs up or thumbs down to becoming a beekeeper.
The next fall class will be held on Saturday, October 7. It will start at 9am. Location is St. Peter’s Episcopal Church 950 E. Washington St., Lebanon, IN.

Your Second Step to Success
There is a state Indiana beekeeper organization, the Beekeepers of Indiana. There is a fall and a spring conference which includes a full day class for new beekeepers. You’ll want to attend the full day class. Keep checking in at TBoI website and register as soon as registration opens. It gets full and registration closes. Then you’ve missed a great opportunity.
Your Third Step to Success
RJ Honey will have a Bee School 103 field day. It will be the basics of hive inspection. One group will be instructed by Jeff. Another by Richard. We will go to an RJ Honey bee yard, open up a hive, and show you what you need to look for. There’s no substitute for looking into an active hive with an experienced beekeeper.
In order to register you must purchase from RJ Honey:
-a two deep hive with feeder and mouse guard/entrance reducer
-suit, gloves, smoker and hive tool
Registration is limited to 20 and there is a $50 non-refundable deposit.
This will be held in May. The date will be floating. It is all dependent on the weather. Sunny, little wind and around 70 is what is needed. Preferably it would be on a Saturday, but it could be on a Sunday afternoon.
